How to Choose Your Vape Pen Brand

Similarly to a vape mod, the most important considerations for a vape pen are battery life, size, and airflow. Battery life and size are directly related to each other; the smaller the vape pen, the shorter the battery life. It comes down to how frequently you vape, or how long you’d like to be able to go before charging. Airflow is the same. If you want a direct to lung hit, opt for a wider airflow.

Vape pens have fewer options, are less sophisticated, and less powerful than vape mods. However, they are smaller, more discreet and portable, and simpler to use. They are also, no surprise, significantly cheaper. Many vapers started with vape pens before moving to a vape mod. In the long run, vape mods can actually be more cost-effective since they will last longer.

How to Choose Your Vape Mod Brand

A vape mod is the power source for your vape. While there are varying types, at its essence it’s a case that holds rechargeable batteries for supplying electricity to a vaping atomizer.

Vape mods vary widely by price, so it’s important to set a general budget before starting your search. However, a high quality vape mod should last you at least a few years, so it’s worth investing in a piece that will suit all of your needs.

“How much power do I want, and what size do I want my mod to be?” These two questions often involve trade-offs. A basic rule of thumb is: the more power, the larger the mod. Smaller mods have less power. Realistically, however, unless you’re interested in super-sized vapor clouds, you don’t need the super high wattage of some models.

Another question you should ask yourself is, “How long and how often do I want to vape?” This will impact battery size and determine if you need removable or non-removable batteries. Removable batteries allow you to carry multiple batteries with you at a time. If your battery runs out of charge, you can just pop in another one instead of having to charge the current one before you can vape again. However, removable batteries can be more expensive (and you have to buy multiple to gain any benefit).

Next, you should consider “how sophisticated do I want my chip technology to be?” Most mods are now digital – with a display and chip technology that can control the wattage and the temperature. More sophisticated technology will have better control and more options, but will be more expensive and more complicated to use.

Once you’ve answered these questions, you should look to find a high-quality mod that meets your needs while also being aesthetically and ergonomically pleasing. It needs to have the right combination of features and be from a trusted brand that will deliver you a consistent, long-lasting vape.

How to Choose Your Vape Tank Brand

The vape tank is the core piece of vaping machinery. It holds the e-juice and contains the wick and coils for heating the e-juice and producing the vapor. As the most important piece of vaping hardware, it also has the most options and variations. Some of the most important features to consider are the coils, the airflow, capacity, and material.

The resistance of coils is measured in ohms. With lower ohms, your vape will have a harder hit, more vapor, warmer vapor, and a shorter battery life. The higher the ohm, the harder your vape will hit, with less vapor, cooler vapor, and a longer battery life. Neither is better nor worse than the other; it comes down to personal preference.

A new style of tank is the sub-ohm tank. These have coils with less than one ohm of resistance. The main draw of sub-ohm tanks is the amount of vapor produced. If you vape direct to lung, instead of mouth to lung, you’ll likely prefer sub-ohm tanks.

The airflow measurement impacts how big of a draw you can take. The wider the airflow, the bigger the draw. Beginners should start with a smaller airflow to restrict the draw.

Capacity simply measures how much e-liquid the tank can hold. Depending on how often you vape, if you mind carrying e-liquid with you, and size preferences, you may want a bigger or smaller tank.

Material is less impactful. Some tanks are plastic while others are glass. Glass will not deteriorate down over time as plastic might, but it is also breakable.

Lastly, ensure that your tank and your mod work together because not all do. If you’re new to vaping, a starter kit may be your best bet so you get pieces that work together.

How to Choose Your Vape Juice Brand

You could have the highest-end custom mod in the world, but most of the vape flavor still comes from the vape juice. To decide upon the best e-juice for your preferences, you’ll need to consider two things: the composition and the flavor.

E-juice, or e-liquid, has only three or four ingredients: vegetable glycerin (VG), propylene glycol (PG), natural and/or artificial flavoring, and possibly nicotine. VG and PG make up over 80% of the juice, so the ratio of VG to PG is critical for getting your best vape.

PG is less viscous than VG, has a better throat kick, and has almost no flavor. This means it's slower to gunk up your coils and carries the added flavors really well. The throat kick is more similar to the kick from cigarettes. Unfortunately, it doesn’t create a lot of vapor for those big, vape clouds many vapers enjoy. Some people are also allergic or sensitive to PG.

VG is more viscous, has a slightly sweet taste, produces huge vape clouds, and has a lung kick. E-juices higher in VG can gunk up your coils more quickly and may have a more muted taste since it doesn’t carry flavors as well.

A common PG to VG ratio is 30:70, although many people adjust these ratios based on personal preference. If you love a lot of vapor, go for a higher VG ratio. If the throat kick from PG is more your thing, buy a juice with a higher PG ratio.

Nicotine is the addictive substance found in cigarettes, so if you’re trying to quit smoking, finding the right nicotine level is critical. In e-juice, the level of nicotine ranges from 0% to 3.6% nicotine by volume. So, if you choose a 1.8% nicotine strength e-juice, 1.8% of the liquid is nicotine, and the remaining 98.2% is PG, VG, and flavoring. It may also be expressed in milligrams, where 18 milligrams is equal to 1.8% nicotine by volume.

If you are switching to vaping from smoking cigarettes, use your current smoking level as a guide for the amount of nicotine. The more you cigarettes you regularly smoke, the higher concentration of nicotine you should start with. Over time, you can gradually reduce the nicotine concentration to beat your addiction with few or no withdrawal symptoms.

When choosing a nicotine level, you should also take into consideration how often you will be vaping. If you vape almost continuously throughout the day, you will need to choose a lower concentration to avoid making yourself sick or your addiction stronger. If you will only vape a couple times a day, a higher concentration of nicotine will satisfy your craving in fewer hits.

Last, but certainly not least, is the flavoring. If you don’t like the flavor, you won’t use it! The first e-juice flavors were generally tobacco flavored. Many brands still carry tobacco flavored vape juices to mimic the flavor of popular cigarette brands. However, most vapers have expanded their vape palate to more adventurous flavors, including dessert, fruit, and cocktail flavors. The flavors are nearly endless, so you’ll surely find something that’s perfect for you.
