Dead after 3 weeks, annoying menus, great flavor and clouds
review by darthvaper on 11/10/2017
Kind of a mixed review but I will spell out my experience so far.
Received new the Alien, loved it immediately, I loved the clouds and was able to adjust for each different type of e-liquid to maximize flavor. I am an all day vaper and usually vape in the range of 45 - 55W. All of my flavors tasted better and had more flavor then I remember using my previous setup. I love the look and feel also and the nice firing "Click" you get.
Menus - I find navigation of the menus somewhat annoying, also I really dislike you have to click the fire button sometimes to figure out if it is locked and to get the screen to come on. A couple of times, I had placed it in my pocket, forgetting to lock it, and the temperature + button got pressed and moved to the temp to 220W. I couldn't tell this happened until I clicked the fire button the first time and heard my coil going crazy.
The menu navigation is not full proof either and can cause you to accidentally change your settings if you are not paying attention. 5 clicks to lock and unlock (frequent action), 3 clicks to change menu settings.... If you intend to unlock, and click the first three times fast, and then miss a click, get slow, or get distracted between the 3rd and 4th fire, it goes into the settings, of which the first option is "Mode" if you do not notice this, it walks thru it's menu and automatically selects "Temperature Mode", which may be a completely different setup. At a minimum they should have made it so that it is 3 clicks to unlock, 5 for settings, as this would prevent inadvertent settings changes. Turning the device off requires more steps and time then it should. Some real improvements on the navigation of the controls and settings on the Alien are needed.
Screen Brightness - Screen Brightness is really lacking in bright sunlight. Can't see it a lot of times.
Dead after 3 weeks - The unit died after 3 weeks with the infamous "black screen". I searched the internet and found ways to get it back on, I tried a few of them and it sorta worked, for a bit. After a few hits, the screen would blink bright and dim and the unit would shutdown. I tried the "Black Screen fix" again, was able to get it to restart. Throughout the process, I tried updating firmware (with success), and changed to a completely new set of fully charged batteries that I verified with a Multi-meter. Finally, the unit seemed to stabilize, and come on, but now it always gives me 0V reading for both batteries, even though I know they are both good (even tried them in another mod to make sure I wasn't crazy). The Alien had power, as the screen would come on, it just always though they were at 0 volt. If I tried to vape, it would say "Low Battery" and refuse to fire, (interestingly enough it would fire, even at 55W, if I had a USB charger plugged in with the batteries in. 55W is way above the power a USB port can supply, so it could draw power from the batteries, it just thought they dead all the time for some reason).. Finally, it just went dead, can't get it to come back on, none of the black screen fixes work, I am sending it back.
Before purchasing, I read both really good and really bad review (especially about the unit going dead). I decided to buy anyway, looks like SMOK hasn't gotten these problems addressed yet. I hope they do, as I wan't to like this mod.
