The Smok Alien
The Alien looks quite unlike any other box mod out there right now. It has interesting body lines that run against the natural boxy nature of these devices. Instead, it features sleek curves and odd angles that make it look larger than life.
On one side, a carbon-fiber panel is set into the accented frame, giving it an ultra-modern appearance. On the other, the carbon fiber is replaced by an LED screen. The layout of the screen makes it blend perfectly into the side of the device rather than standing out like some of the other devices on the market.
The adjustment buttons and USB port also fit flawlessly into the side panel beneath the screen, flowing into the other design elements. The best word to describe the aesthetic is clean.
By most standards, the Alien is relatively small for its 220-watt power rating. The curved sides make it fit into the hand easier than a box with sharp corners. It is also slightly shorter than most devices. With the Baby Beast installed, it makes for a very compact vape that delivers big power.
Technical Features and Specifications
Saying that the Smok Alien is capable of 220 watts of power is one thing, but seeing it in action is an entirely different matter. Smok went above and beyond to design a menu and system that makes this device very customizable. It comes with all the standard temperature-control options, variable-wattage mode and tons of information about how you vape.
The home screen on the device provides you with all of your key performance numbers like wattage, puff counter, amps, ohms, volts and temperature. The display is laid out nicely so that it’s easy to read, and the screen is very clear and legible, which is a bonus considering how much information is packed into the space.
As you click through the menu you will discover a number of other advanced features that are worth noting. Smok has created an incredible vapor effect option when you are using wattage mode. This allows you to change the ramp up or ramp down of your device whenever you hit the firing button.
You can choose a soft hit, which starts out slightly below your desired setting and ramps up over the first half of your draw. Or you can choose a hard hit, which starts high and edges off as you draw.
Meanwhile, temperature-control mode also offers some fine-tuning options, allowing you to adjust your temperature coefficient of resistance and make some other minor changes to the delivery of your vapor.
Plus, Smok plans on supporting the Smok Alien with regular firmware updates so you can count on plenty of performance bumps in the future, and possible new features sent to you from the developers.
The Baby Beast deserves its own review. It’s an incredible sub-ohm tank that features all of the latest trends like top filling and a swivel cap. It has a 3-milliliter capacity and can be set up with either horizontal or vertical coil builds. It’s incredibly versatile, but lives up to the Beast namesake.
Overall, you get exactly what you pay for with the Smok Alien, and that is a lot! Two hundred watts may seem like more than you would ever reasonably need, but with all of the vapor effects and temperature controls, you can make great use of that power and see real results.
The Baby Beast tank does its part in delivering a solid draw regardless of the build you are using. The menu is easy to navigate and you can learn a lot just from the information displayed on the side screen. Plus, who wouldn’t love showing off the sexy designs of this vaporizer?
